The type of horse race run by thoroughbreds gets the best press of all types of races, with events like the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness given lots of media coverage. But these aren’t the only types of races out there. What began in North America as simple races in fields or on country roads has branched off and developed into several different types of horse races over the decades. The United States inherited some races from England, but others that developed here have also been exported into the international racing world.

Thoroughbred races are in the category of flat racing since they run on a flat oval track. Quarter horses also race on a flat track, but it is straight, and only a quarter mile long. These horses run at full speed through their race, contrasting with thoroughbreds which, although the fastest horses in the world, vary their speed during their longer races. Meanwhile, the harness race, with standard-bred horses pulling a cart and driver on a banked oval track, is another type of horse race that developed in the United States and was exported to the rest of the world.

Those are the types of horse race most prevalent in North America, and events in all three kinds can be found in many other countries as well. But other types of horse races are more popular in different parts of the world, with some only starting to become popular here. For example, the Steeplechase, which is a race involving an obstacle course and several jumps the horse has to take, is very popular in Britain, though it’s not seen as often in the United States. And Arabian racing is just beginning to make its presence felt here, in new events established to promote Arabian race horses.

Of course, at almost any horse race, you can add to the excitement by placing bets to see if you can gauge which horses will be most successful. If you’re a beginner just going to your first race, then you might do well to get some advice on how to read the race program and Daily Racing Form first, and sit back and observe for awhile, before trying to bet. But once you’ve got a feel for the process, give it a try. Watch the races for the beauty and power of the horses themselves, but add some extra spice with a little bet to round out your enjoyment.
