The Exciting Varieties of Horse Race Events

The television networks give the famous Triple Crown races (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes) such intensive coverage that you could almost get the impression that these are the only type of horse race events that really matter. But do some research on horse racing news websites and it doesn’t take long to discover that there are many other types of races. People have developed different kinds of races over the years that have then led to the development of different kinds of breeds that are suited to them.

The type of horse race run in the Triple Crown or other events involving thoroughbreds is known as a flat race, since it’s run on a flat track. Quarter horses, too, run at full speed on a flat track which, instead of being oval in shape like the one for thoroughbreds, is a straight track a quarter mile in length. Harness races, on the other hand, take place on an oval track that is not flat, but banked on the turns. These races involve standard-bred horses that pull lightweight carts manned with a driver.

Those are the kinds of horse race most prevalent in America, and events in all three kinds can be seen in a number of other countries as well. Yet other types of horse races are even more well loved in different regions of the world, with a few just beginning to become prevalent here.

For example, the Steeplechase, which is a race that features an obstacle course and a few jumps the horse has to make, is a great favorite in Britain, although it’s not found as often in the US. Moreover, Arabian racing is just beginning to make its presence felt here, in new events designed to promote Arabian race horses.

Each kind of horse race is a work of art, worth watching for its own sake, and for the beauty and power of the horses. But as you get to know the various types of races, and the differences in the horses involved, it will also be tempting to explore the available horse racing tips to add another element to your enjoyment of these races; betting on your favorite horse and perhaps winning a little money. You can get involved in this aspect of the game or just enjoy getting to know the different types of horse races. There is room for every type of fan in the horse racing world.

Online betting for horse racing is great but there is something missing. If you simply monitor the horse racing results, you do not get to experience what a horse race is all about. You do not get to see the horses parade past you as they march towards the starting gate. Horse racing is very fun to watch even if you never bet a dime.
