Know More About The Well Established Horse Races
A thoroughbred horse race and a quarter horse race both involve horses with a great deal of speed, but they are still run quite differently. Races by thoroughbreds go for quite a bit more distance, while those run by quarter horses, as you might expect from their name, are only one quarter of a mile long. The distance actually came before the name of the horse, when flat racing tracks of a mile in length were quite expensive to create. Tracks of a quarter mile long were created instead, and the horses who raced on them took their name from them.
Some of the differences between a thoroughbred horse race and a quarter horse race stem from the nature of the two types of horses involved. While both breeds are very fast, the quarter horse is more of a sprinter, and it runs flat out for the entire quarter mile. The thoroughbred, on the other hand, races at varying speeds for a longer period of time; running steadily and then giving an extra push whenever it becomes necessary. Quarter horses are slightly smaller than thoroughbreds, and have much more powerful hind leg muscles. The quarter horse racing track is straight, while a thoroughbred race is run on a flat, oval race track.
While you can find thoroughbred horse racing proliferating all over the world, the quarter horse race is not yet quite as prevalent. There are efforts being made, though, to increase its popularity in several other countries. For example, in early March of 2008, the first Australian Quarter Horse Racing National Conference was held in southwestern Victoria, with five members of the corresponding American association attending along with the Australian delegates. The stated goal of this conference was to discuss ways to try to expand Australian horse racing to increase the interest in and number of quarter horse races in that country.
Everyone is familiar with the thoroughbred horse race. It has considerable prestige in the United States, with races like those that constitute the Triple Crown (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes), or the Epsom Derby in England, held to be the pinnacles of the sport. This type of racing is also very popular in places like Australia and even Japan. But the quarter horse is actually the most popular American breed at the moment, and it is slowly gaining ground in international racing circles as well.
